Background of the Study
Social media has rapidly transformed communication, particularly among youths in Abeokuta South, where digital platforms are increasingly influencing language practices. Indigenous language usage is being reshaped by online interactions, where global languages often dominate, leading to a gradual shift away from traditional forms of expression (Olaitan, 2023). Youths engage in multilingual communication online, blending indigenous expressions with contemporary slang and international languages, which impacts the purity and continuity of their native tongue (Adebola, 2024). This digital phenomenon has sparked debates on cultural preservation versus modern communication efficiency. Social media serves as both a platform for cultural expression and a catalyst for language erosion. This study examines how social media affects the usage of indigenous languages among youths, considering the role of digital identity, online communities, and the influence of global media trends (Balogun, 2025). The findings aim to provide a nuanced understanding of the interplay between digital media and indigenous language maintenance in a rapidly modernizing society.
Statement of the Problem
The pervasive influence of social media in Abeokuta South has led to a noticeable decline in indigenous language usage among youths. As global languages dominate digital spaces, traditional linguistic practices are being sidelined, contributing to cultural erosion and loss of identity. The lack of concerted efforts to integrate indigenous languages into online platforms further exacerbates this trend. This study seeks to investigate the effects of social media on indigenous language usage and identify ways to promote digital content that preserves cultural heritage (Balogun, 2025).
